Robert (Bob) Owens Obituary

Robert (Bob) J. Owens, 91, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 20, 2024.  He was born in Chicago, IL to the late Thomas E. Owens Sr. and Edith R. Owens (nee Bognar).

Bob was a devoted and loving father to, Jo Owens (Russell Swann), Rhonda Stewart (Anthony), Sabrina (Sam) Owens-Caballero (Red), and Jeffrey Stemes (Jennifer); grandfather to, Kahri, Dustin, Mariah, and Alyric; great-grandfather to, Zachary, McKenzie, Izabella, and Lexzie.

Preceding Bob in death were his sister, Mary Ann Young; and his brothers, James M. Owens, and Thomas E. Owens Jr.

He served honorably with the U.S. Marine Corps from 1952-1955, and the U.S. Marine Corps Ready Reserve from 1955-1960.  He was also a veteran of the Korean War.

Bob was passionate about learning throughout his life and sharing his knowledge with his children and grandchildren.  He read extensively and enjoyed history, science, and a good conversation (never a stranger to anyone).

His knowledge of the St. Joseph River and its tributaries throughout its length in Michigan and Indiana was extensive.  He spent many years writing and speaking about the history and early inhabitants of the river and surrounding areas, as well as the importance of keeping our environment and waters clean for current and future generations.

Bob enjoyed being outdoors canoeing and the tranquility of nature while paddling many rivers and streams.  He actively supported Friends of the St. Joe River Association since its founding; and he assisted with organizing over twenty annual river clean-ups.  He also annually hosted what he called, Huckleberry Finn Floats, on the St. Joseph River for twenty-five years.

In addition to spending time with his children and grandchildren, he also appreciated time with his extended family of cousins, nieces, nephews, and numerous friends.  He thoroughly enjoyed the game of football, and was a devoted Notre Dame fan and could not wait for the next opening season.

His presence, laughter, and smile were constant, and he will be deeply missed.
