Bernard Joseph Randall

March 15, 1933 — September 28, 2023

Granger

Bernard Joseph Randall (Bernie) passed away peacefully at home on September 28, 2023. Born in Philadelphia, on March 15, 1933, he was the youngest son of Merwyn Calvin and Mary Imelda (Voll) Randall and brother of John V. (Patricia Crowe) and Thomas A. (Constance Lawrence).

Bernie was a graduate of St. Joseph’s Preparatory School in Philadelphia, followed by college at the University of Notre Dame, graduating in 1954. He served in the U.S. Navy, reaching the rank of lieutenant, and married his love, Mary Ann Tominovich, in December, 1955. They had three children: Suzanne, Bernard Jr. (“BJ”), and John.

Bernie spent his career working in labor relations where he negotiated contracts with the various company unions where he was employed. He retired in 1996 from the Torrington Company as Vice President of Labor Relations and he and Mary Ann moved to Granger, Indiana, where they have resided ever since.

After retirement Bernie began a second career as a volunteer. He was a docent at the Basilica at Notre Dame and the College Football Hall of Fame. He volunteered with Meals on Wheels and spent 20 years volunteering with hospice. He also served at daily Mass at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Granger, Indiana for many years. The word that best describes him is: faithful. He was faithful to his wife and children, his church, and his principles. If he made a commitment he honored it. He rarely, if ever, missed Mass. Even less rarely did he miss a Notre Dame football game. If it wasn’t on TV, he found it on the radio. He and Mary Ann made many trips to Notre Dame Stadium to see the Irish play, even driving from upstate New York where they were living at the time. He just loved all things Notre Dame. He also loved his family, including cousins and in-laws, hosting many family reunions as the “pater familias”.

He didn’t have much time for hobbies, but he did enjoy a good round of golf, a summer afternoon drive in his BMW convertible with the top down, and a well- mixed Manhattan (not necessarily in that order).

He will certainly be missed by all who knew him. Bernie was a gentleman from the old school who never failed to stand when a lady entered the room or to hold her chair, even if it meant he had to sprint across the room to do so. He was wise and generous. He was a great man.

Bernie is preceded in death by his parents, brothers, and their spouses.

He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 68 years, Mary Ann, as well as their children; son-in-law David Shevitz; granddaughter, Madeline; and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.
