South Bend

Brian Edward Lower, 61, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away on June 13, 2026. Born in South Bend, he was the son of the late Edward Lower and Joan Lower, who survives him.

A graduate of Clay High School, Brian was a dedicated worker throughout his life. He took great pride in working alongside his father and his brother, Patrick. Brian enjoyed life’s simple pleasures, particularly a well-cooked plate of liver and onions. Regardless of the occasion, he always saved room for dessert, proving himself a true connoisseur of oversized cheesecake or carrot cake with cream cheese frosting.

Known throughout the community as a master butcher, Brian spent his life doing what he loved. Alongside his brother, Patrick, he learned the trade directly from their father, absorbing the craft from a young age. After years of honing their skills at the family-owned Eddie’s Steak Shed, Brian and Patrick, inherited not just a business, but a legacy of hard work, honesty and precision. For several years, Brian and Patrick operated Eddie’s together, they ensured every customer received the highest quality meat accompanied by a welcoming smile.

Beyond his work behind the counter, he took great pride in his role as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). With a heart of gold, Brian was always available to offer a helping hand or a listening ear. Caring for others came naturally to him, and he touched countless lives through his compassion, kindness, and unwavering dedication. His work enabled him to forge lasting bonds within his community.

Brian was passionate about hunting, fishing, snorkeling, and traveling. He was devoted to his family and loved the company of his dogs. Throughout his life, Brian found a sense of peace around the water. He was especially grateful for the memories he made at Davis Lake, Eagle Lake, and the Lower Family Pond. He will be remembered for his love of pulling pranks on others, particularly on his coworkers. He enjoyed traveling with his family, especially to Alaska. A fan of rock music-most notably his idol, Ted Nugent- Brian lived by the motto of working hard and playing even harder.

Brian was preceded in death by his father, Edward Lower, his brother, Patrick Lower, his friend Michael “Norton” Takace. He is survived by his mother, Joan Lower of Granger; his daughter, Vanessa (Shawn Banks) Hawkey of Elkhart, IN; his son, Troy (Sheri) Lower of Indianapolis; his sisters, Pamela (Jay) Cool of Granger and Diann (Michael) Linback of Niles, MI; his grandchildren, Ellie and Maxwell Hawkey, and Jacob Bayless (Nicole Haas) of Lexington, KY; and several nephews and nieces.

Brian will be greatly missed, yet forever remembered for the love he gave freely and the light he brought to the lives of those around him.

In recent years, as he faced health challenges, Brian expressed to his loved ones: “I’ve had my fun. No tears unless you’re happy! Remember and laugh. I love you all more than words.”
