Bruce Albert Heustis, 78, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away peacefully on August 22, 2026, at StoryPoint Senior Living in Granger, Indiana.

Bruce was born on March 16, 1948, in Coldwater, Michigan, to Albert Heustis and Catherine Heustis. Throughout his life, Bruce followed a path marked by curiosity, creativity, craftsmanship, and a deep interest in understanding the human experience.

Bruce’s first career was in construction and home design. He became a skilled home designer and builder and owned and operated Heustis Builders in Three Rivers, Michigan. He spent many years creating homes and working in the construction industry before retiring from construction in 2002. His work as a builder reflected his creativity and his ability to envision something that did not yet exist and bring it to life.

Midway through his life, Bruce embarked on an entirely new chapter. He pursued a master’s degree in counseling at Pacifica Graduate Institute, where he specialized in Jungian psychology. Following his graduation, he opened a private practice in South Bend, Indiana, where he worked as a counselor, therapist, and Jungian psychologist. Bruce maintained his private practice for approximately 20 years. His second career allowed him to combine his intellectual curiosity with a genuine interest in people and the complexities of the human mind.

Bruce married Marcia LeMay in Marcellus, Michigan, on June 15, 2002. She survives him and resides in South Bend, Indiana. He is also survived by his former wife, Cindy Heustis of Virginia Beach, Virginia; sons: Mark Heustis of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Keith Heustis (Julie) of Raleigh, North Carolina; sisters: Christine Zimmer of Traverse City, Michigan, Mary Dillinger of Traverse City, Michigan, and Gail VanKleock (Parker Babbage) of Boston, Massachusetts; stepdaughters: Marie Gerdich (Bob Stillwell) of Anchorage, Alaska, and Leslie (Mansour) Eid of South Bend, Indiana; and stepson Alexander (Rebecca) LeMay of South Bend, Indiana. Bruce also leaves behind five grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren, and two step-great-grandchildren, who will carry forward memories of his life and the many paths he traveled.

Bruce lived an unconventional and interesting life, never limiting himself to a single profession or definition. He built houses, designed homes, studied psychology, counseled others, and continually sought to understand the world and the people around him. His journey from builder and designer to Jungian psychologist was a testament to his willingness to begin anew and pursue meaningful work at every stage of his life.

He will be remembered by his family, friends, former clients, and all those whose lives he touched for the many chapters of his life, his intellect, creativity, and the unique perspective he brought to the world.

Bruce’s life was a life of building—in the literal sense through his work in construction, and in the deeper sense through the relationships, ideas, and understanding he cultivated throughout his years.
