Dorothy Jean Ball, a beloved figure in her family and community, and a dedicated registered nurse, passed away peacefully on May 23, 2025, in Mishawaka, Indiana, at the age of 94. Born on January 3, 1931, in Michigan City, Indiana, to the late Albert and Anna Florence (Severin) Seedorf, Dorothy dedicated her life to her family and serving others, leaving a lasting impact through her compassionate work in healthcare.
Dorothy pursued her passion for nursing early in life, earning her nursing degree from St. Elizabeth’s Nursing School, Lafayette, Indiana in 1952. Her career spanned various roles at hospitals and nursing facilities, showcasing her commitment to caring for those in need. In a groundbreaking move for her time, she co-founded Michiana Healthcare, an organization dedicated to training Certified Nursing Assistants, thus shaping the future of caregiving in her community.
In September 1952, Dorothy married her beloved husband, Robert, whom she met at a St. E’s dance while he was attending Purdue University. Their love story flourished, leading them to settle in South Bend in 1953, where they built a joyous life together. The couple shared many cherished moments, including significant travels, notably a meaningful spiritual journey trip to Israel. Their journey together exemplified their unity and passion for exploring the world around them.
Dorothy took immense pride in her family, and she enjoyed cooking, crafting, and sewing with her grandchildren, fostering creativity and love. Dorothy was a dedicated mother and grandmother, known for her ability to nurture relationships with her daughters, Debra Ball and Pamela (Doug) Wise; as well as her sons, James (Sharon) Ball and Richard (Kathryn) Ball. She leaves behind a legacy of strength and unity within her family, which includes ten grandchildren: Kevin, James, Courtney, Michelle, Chelsea, Philip, Kristin, Anna, Karina and Timothy; as well as fifteen great-grandchildren. Dorothy is also remembered by her extended family, including many nieces and nephews, who cherished her generosity and kindness, especially her great-nephew, Matt who resided with her. Her family will deeply miss her warmth, wisdom, and unwavering support.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; her brothers, Owen and Albert; and her sister, Julia.
Beyond her family life, Dorothy was active in church activities and continuously sought to uplift those around her. Her love for reading and her various interests engaged her spirit and enriched her life, leaving a positive imprint on the hearts of all who knew her.
As we remember Dorothy Jean Ball, we celebrate her remarkable life filled with love, care, and a profound commitment to her family and profession. Her legacy will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to have crossed her path. Dorothy lived her life as a follower of Christ and in accordance with her nursing school motto,”Vita Aliis Vota”,” which means, “Life Devoted to Others.”
