GRANGER – Max E. Helman, DO, FACOFP distinguished, 83, passed away peacefully at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, on Wednesday January 30, 2019.
Dr. Helman was born on September 22, 1935, in Huntington, New York, to the late Max and Rose (Boccia) Helman. Dr. Helman married his wife Sharon Wozny on December 1, 1982. For forty years they shared a life of love, family and travel. He leaves behind his children: Scott Helman of Mishawaka, IN, Deborah (Jeff) Ammerman of Niles, MI, Brian (Richelle) Helman of Kingston, NH, Tony (Heather) Traxler of Omaha, NE, Laura Helman, DO of Granger; his five grandchildren: Matthew Ammerman, Alyssa Helman, Seth Helman, Olivia Traxler, Brooklyn Henderson; brother, Ronald Helman of Sunrise, FL; sister-in-law Charlotte Helman of Dix Hills, NY; brother-in-law, Bob (Kathy) Wozny; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding Dr. Helman in death, along with his parents, is a brother Donald Helman, his father and mother-in-law, Eugene and Bernice Wozny, nephew Justin Wozny and niece Rochelle Helman.
Dr. Helman served in the U.S. Army from 1958-1960. He was a New York University undergraduate and received his doctorate from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine. He was a board member of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians from 1989 to 2001 and had the honor to serve as the President from 1998-1999. Dr. Helman also served on the board of the Indiana Osteopathic Association of Physicians and Surgeons. He was a family physician in Mishawaka for 48 years. Dr. Helman was a longtime member of Knollwood Country Club.
Visitation for Dr. Helman will be on Monday, February 4th, from 10:30am-12:30pm, with service to immediately follow, at the McGann Hay Funerals / Cremations Gatherings, Granger Chapel, 13260 SR 23, enter the parking lot on Cherry Rd. Rabbi Michael Friedland, of Sinai Synagogue, officiating.
