Edel Berberi

January 1, 1929 — August 14, 2021

South Bend- Edel A. (Winje) Berberi, 92, passed away on Saturday, August 14, 2021, at home, surrounded by family. Edel was born on January 1, 1929 in Fort Wayne, IN, to the late Severt Winje and Louise Renne Winje. Edel was married to Dilaver, who passed away in 1989. She is survived by four of her seven sisters – Ruth, Amy, Esther and Karen – and by her sons, Dille (Julie) Berberi of Saint Charles, IL, and Viktor (Tammy) Berberi of Morris, MN; grandchildren, Rachel, Laura, Henry, and Andelys; and her dog, Mik. Edel earned a doctorate in Education from Indiana University and taught college English and composition at various institutions in Michiana until her retirement in 1994. She loved to travel, visiting most countries in Europe more than once. As a way of remembering her travels, she developed a habit of painting her favorite people and sites abroad. Several of her oil paintings have been featured in local exhibits. An avid reader, she loved the St. Joseph County Public Library. She enjoyed playing Bridge, Quiddler, and Mahjong – and Phase 10, Uno, and Tripoly with her grandkids – over a cup of tea and cookies. Friends and family will remember Edel's belief in democratic values and processes, her reasoned and measured demeanor, and her extraordinary kindness for friends and strangers alike. The family is holding a memorial for Edel at Villa Macri in Granger at 4:00 pm, Thursday, September 16, with a brief program at 4:30. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the St Joseph County Public Library or a charity of choice. To send private condolences to the family, please visit:http://www.mcgannhay.com/condolences.html
