Frederick Herczeg

February 22, 1950 — February 5, 2021

Frederick G. Herczeg passed peacefully at home on February 5th after a battle with a rare brain virus. He is preceded in death by his parents Frank and Jeanette Herczeg.
He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 10 years, Mary Beth DiGann-Herczeg; two daughters Erica Gruver (Adam Gruver) and Alicia Herczeg (Sam Greene) and their mother Claire Herczeg; three step-children Elizabeth Kropp (Sandy Craig) with grandchildren Oscar & Sam, Emily Kropp, and Zachary Kropp; sister Phyllis Herczeg (Arthur Konecny) and two nieces, Jessica and Elizabeth Herczeg-Konecny.
An eternal boy of summer, he grew up in Mishawaka, IN, falling in love with baseball and fishing, both of which would become lifelong loves. A true Renaissance man and artist, he’d also develop lifetime pursuits in pottery, woodworking, and what he’d affectionally call “tinkering.”
After graduating from Marian High School, Fred attended Indiana University in Bloomington, receiving a degree in Political Science, and was an enthusiastic participant in the Little 500. His interest in technology and engineering steered him towards his career in Aerospace and later Information Technology, where he served as a senior executive for several Fortune 500 companies.
He shared his wit, humor, kind smile, sparkling eyes, and endless hobbies with everyone he met. And though he tried mightily, the fish didn’t always bite — but as anyone who went out on the boat with Fred knows, any day on the water was a great day on the water. In his retired life, he loved spending time with family most – as a big brother, loving father, doting “Papa”, and devoted husband.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to a memorial fund at Notre Dame Federal Credit Union (2102 East Ireland Rd., South Bend, IN, 46614). Donations can be made payable to Frederick G. Herczeg, Memo: Funeral Fund. These donations will go to a memorial bench to be placed at a South Bend public park in his honor and to Our Lady of the Road Homeless Services in South Bend.
Due to COVID, there will be no services as this time. However, there will be a Celebration of Life later this summer. To send private condolences or to share memories, please visit www.McGannHay.com
