In Loving Memory of Irene Flossie (Sayler) Hay (May 20, 1933 - May 31, 2026)
Irene Hay, age 93, passed away peacefully May 31, 2026. Known affectionately as "Nellie,"lived a deeply fulfilling and vibrantly rich life defined by her independence, determination, and boundless curiosity. Born in Rensselaer, Indiana, to James A. Sayler and Reva Ellen Atkinson, Irene’s story began on a family farm. Surrounded by the daily rhythms of farm life and the clucking of chickens, her early years instilled in her a grounded appreciation for nature and a lifelong resilience. In her later years, she lived in a beautiful home in South Bend, where she enjoyed going out with her circle of friends and attending church. She also shared many wonderful years with her long-time companion, William J. "Bill" Nelson, until his passing in 2011.
Irene approached every chapter of her life with optimism, a compassionate nature, and a wonderful sense of humor. She accomplished everything she aspired to, leaving behind a legacy of academic excellence, professional achievement, and an enduring love for her family.
Irene’s creative and vibrant spirit was evident early on. During her senior year of high school, she was selected for the Homecoming Queen’s Court, famously wearing a brown satin dress she meticulously designed and sewed herself. After completing a year of business studies at Michiana Business College in South Bend, she launched a successful career as an Executive Secretary. She brought her exceptional organizational skills to esteemed local corporations, including Studebaker, Whirlpool, and Bendix, and even modeled extensively for Studebaker andWhirlpool.
While working at Bendix, her passion for education called to her. She attended night classes at Indiana University South Bend (IUSB), where she earned her degree in education, proudly graduating alongside her late sister, Beatrice.
Irene dedicated 42 years of her life to the South Bend Community School Corporation, shaping the minds of countless students. Her remarkable teaching career spanned German Township School, Lafayette Elementary School, Thomas Jefferson Elementary School, and Hamilton Primary Center. Her unwavering dedication was formally recognized in 2005 when she was named Teacher of the Year.
A true lifelong learner, Irene not only taught summer school locally—focusing on reading and mathematics—but also expanded her horizons by teaching summer school in Hong Kong. Her academic drive culminated in her acceptance as a candidate to the prestigious Indiana University Doctoral Program.
A woman of many talents, Irene pursued her hobbies with the same vigor she applied to her career. Irene explored the world extensively, visiting Belgium, Holland, Austria, Italy, France, Monaco, Switzerland, Germany, Poland, Russia, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Greece, Mexico, Canada, Singapore, Bangkok, Thailand, and Hong Kong.
An avid sports enthusiast, she loved the thrill of downhill skiing, sailing, deep-sea fishing, boating, tennis, golf, and bowling. She stayed active through biking and jogging, and always remained a loyal fan of Notre Dame Football and the Chicago Bears.
She was an avid reader, a frequent visitor to art galleries, and a wonderful cook who loved experimenting with new recipes. She also cherished classic 1950s and 60s music, finding great joy in the timeless melodies of Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra.
Formally educated in sewing and tailoring, Irene crafted everything from elegant dresses and tailored suits to down-filled ski suits and tasteful home décor.
Deeply connected to her community, Irene was a devoted follower at Grace United Methodist Church. She served as the Parliamentarian for the Sunshine Club, using her expertise to guide the organization's governance, and was a proud member of the Delta Kappa Gamma SocietyInternational, championing the professional growth of women educators. During her marriage to Sam Hay, former Vice-President of the Kuert Concrete plants, she was also closely tied to the region's entrepreneurial community.
Irene’s warmth and generosity will be deeply missed by the family she cherished. She is survived by countless nieces and nephews.
Irene Hay walked her own path with grace, leaving behind a world made brighter by her kindness, her creativity, and her enduring love.
