James Robert Crumley (87) passed away peacefully at the Center for Hospice Care on Saturday, April 8, 2023. Jim is relieved of the pain that he endured during his extensive chronic illness. Jim’s daughter, son, and brother comforted Jim before he gently respired overlooking the Saint Joseph River and Central Park in Mishawaka.
Jim was born on June 17, 1935, at his home in the high country near Sneedville, TN. Jim was the second of four children born to Ross and Ruby Crumley (Thompson). Jim moved out (at age 17) from his parent’s self-sufficient tobacco farm in the Cumberland Mountains to South Bend, IN. Jim lived with his Aunt Ore and worked several entry level jobs, before securing his long term career at Jordan Automotive Group in Mishawaka.
Jim met his soulmate Geraldine Shaw in South Bend. Jim and Gerry married on December 28, 1953, to begin their 59 years of marriage. Their two children cared for Jim and Gerry during their ultimate illness.
Surviving family with deep loving memories are daughter, Cindy (Kenny) Montgomery of Mishawaka; son, Craig (Nancy) Crumley of South Bend; and brother, Paul Crumley of South Bend. Jim was Papa to four surviving grandchildren: Ryan (Gina) Montgomery of Osceola, Scott (Jamie) Crumley of Scottsdale AZ, James W. (Savannah Harper) Crumley of South Bend, and Molly Crumley of South Bend. Jim was also Great Papa to one precious great granddaughter, Isabella Crumley of South Bend.
Preceding Jim’s death is his amazing wife, Gerry (Shaw) Crumley, patiently waiting for Jim with her open arms since May 23, 2012. Also preceding Jim’s death is one grandson, Eric Montgomery; one sister, Billie Jean Stanley; and two brothers, Jerry Crumley and Sam Crumley.
Jim enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, and upgrading his fast cars. Jim and Gerry created a backyard pond oasis with a waterfall and fish. Jim crafted woodworking art in his garage and barn. Jim’s friendly personality and good jokes would brighten your mood. Jim and Gerry loved many household pets they rescued throughout their marriage.
Jim retired at 65 with high praise earned at Jordan Automotive Group in Mishawaka. Jim devoted over 48 years, advancing to be their most requested, reliable diesel mechanic and transmission service expert.
Jim’s family will honor his legacy at a small chapel ceremony (for family only) on Friday, April 14th at 10:00 am. This single ceremony is at McGann Hay University Area Chapel, 2313 East Edison Road, South Bend, IN 46615. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park.
