James A. “Jim” Mungovan, 76, died Friday, May 24, 2024, at his home in Granger, IN. He was the sixth son of Joseph and Honor (Murray) Mungovan. Jim was born in Chicago, January 29, 1948.
Jim is survived by his wife of nearly 55 years, Bonnie Stenson; their daughter, Molly (Kevin) Powers; and grandchildren, Clare and Mary Powers.
Jim also is survived by his brothers, Robert “Bob” Mungovan, Daniel “Dan” (Mary Joan) Murray; and sister, Mary (Murray) Felish. Jim is also survived by scores of nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-grand nieces and nephews.
His brothers Joseph (Joan) Mungovan, Daniel (Mary) Mungovan, William (Elise) Mungovan, and Charles (Ann) Mungovan, preceded Jim in death.
A graduate of Saint Ignatius College Prep, Chicago, IL, Jim attended College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, MA, and the University of Illinois at Chicago Circle. A veteran of the Vietnam War, and of the journalism and technical writing industries, Jim was a student of political analysis and college sports.
When the family moved to Atlanta, Jim was an active member of his long-time parish, the Cathedral of Christ the King, serving in many ministries. He loved attending his monthly dinner group with Bonnie, cheering on the Braves (if they were not playing the Cubs), and coaching Molly’s soccer team. Jim was devoted to his family, working hard to contribute financially, traveling to support Molly’s athletic endeavors, and even taking advantage of his retirement to live close to his grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Saturday, June 29, 2024, at 11:00 A.M. with visitation beginning at 10:00 AM Eastern Daylight Time, at Saint Pius X Catholic Church, Granger, IN. There will be private inurnment on a later date at Queen of Heaven Catholic Cemetery and Mausoleums, Hillside, IL.
