Jim L. Finlay, 74, of Plymouth, Indiana (formerly of Bushnell, Illinois) died Aug. 24 at 6:05 p.m. at the Center for Hospice Care in Roseland, Indiana. He was born August 7, 1946, in Spring Hill, Louisiana, the son of James and Dorothy (Murphy) Finlay. He married Pam Etheridge May 26, 1968, in Olla, LA, who preceded him in death on March 3, 2005. He is also preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Paul Finlay, of West Monroe, Louisiana.He is survived by one son, Craig Finlay, Tishomingo, OK; two daughters, Lara (Dennis) Pierson, South Bend, Indiana and Lainie Finlay (Michel Fahed), Beirut, Lebanon. He had 5 grandchildren that he adored and to whom he gave so much; Duncan (Victoria) Finlay of South Bend, Indiana and Ethan, Emma, Robin and Romy Fahed of Beirut, Lebanon.Throughout his 40 year career in academia, Jim traveled the world creating long lasting friendships and making indelible impressions on those he met. An avid historian, he shared with his wife a love of history and authored numerous books on the Civil War and a complete genealogy of the family dating back 800 years. He doted endlessly on his grandchildren and helped without question anyone in need. But above all things, he loved the most to be in the kitchen making a good Cajun meal and cheering on his favorite football team; LSU. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.There will be no funeral or visitation as cremation rites have been accorded. Memorials may be made to the Bushnell Historical Society.
