Judith Ann Hughes

February 15, 1939 — November 2, 2024

Granger

Judith Ann (Noone) Hughes was born to the late Wilfred and Elizabeth (Brennan) Noone on February 15, 1939, in Indianapolis, Indiana. She passed away on November 2, 2024, at the Ernestine M. Raclin House, a hospice in Mishawaka, Indiana.

Always known as Ann, she was the seventh of 10 children. Ann grew up attending school at St. Joan of Arc parish in Indianapolis, and later Pike Township. As a child and teenager, Ann was a champion swimmer with the Riviera Club, being part of the 1955 National Senior Long-Distance Champions and the 1955 All-American Swimming team. She cherished her time in the water, spending summer days at the pool with her siblings, and later lifeguarding and teaching swimming. Ann shared her love of the water with her children and grandchildren, creating lasting memories at the local pool.

Ann attended Marian College in Indianapolis, where she met the love of her life, Thomas J. Hughes. Married for more than 62 years, they were the proud parents of six children: Kathleen Hughes, the late Mary Hughes Schwane, Thomas (Karen) Hughes, William Hughes, Eileen (Douglas) Padian, and the late Joseph Hughes. Known as Meemah to her grandchildren, she was a beloved grandmother to Jessica (Levi) Bradford, Katie Hughes, and Claire Padian. Meemah was a shining example of Catholic faith and charity, always engaging in activities like camping, Girl Scout projects, and learning new things with her grandchildren.

After nearly twenty years as a housewife, Ann worked as a shoe saleswoman at various children’s shoe stores in the Dallas, Texas area, where she was known for her exceptional care and attention to customers. Even in retirement, Ann continued to show empathy and kindness, volunteering for 20 years at the Center for Hospice. Her dedication reflected her values and left a lasting legacy of compassion and selflessness.

Ann is survived by her siblings, Michael Noone, Margaret Noone, and Susan (Bob) Allison.

She was preceded in death by her siblings: Patricia Schmutte, Catherine Julian, William Flynn, Vincent Noone, Elizabeth Aragona, and Mary Martin. Ann also is survived by numerous Noone and Hughes nieces and nephews.

A Mass Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, November 16, 2024, at 11 a.m. central time at St. Benedict Roman Catholic Church, 2215 West Irving Park Road, Chicago, Illinois, 60618.
