Philip M. Malstaff

April 4, 1945 — August 8, 2025

Granger

Philip Malstaff passed away surrounded by his loving family on August 8, 2025. He was 80 years old, born on April 4, 1945, to the late Dr. Comiel and Helen Malstaff of Mishawaka, Indiana.

Phil is survived by his wife, Carolyn Malstaff; his daughter Michelle (Michael) Horvath; his son, Philip Malstaff Jr; and his daughter Kelley (Joe) Hunter; grandchildren Max Horvath, Kayleigh Malstaff, and Violet Hunter.

Phil was born in Starke County, Florida and lived in Asheville, North Carolina during his younger years before moving to Mishawaka, Indiana. A graduate of Mishawaka High School, Phil followed in the footsteps of his father and enlisted for 2 years in the Army. Graduating from Indiana University with a BS degree in Marketing, Phil focused his career on Sales. Phil enjoyed successes at Xerox, ADP, and with Sprint up until his retirement.

On March 15, 1969, Phil married the love of his life, Carolyn Stopczynski. Phil was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Whether it was summers on Lake Michigan, traveling to various tropical locations with Carolyn, taking a grandchild out to eat for lunch as a special treat, or family vacations in Florida with his grown children; Phil knew the importance of spending time with his family.

Known by many names, Dad, Big Phil, Papa, and Phil Sr., Phil had a love of life and laughter. He inserted laughter whenever possible by telling a joke, wearing a silly costume, or just making a face with the intent of making someone smile. Reminding those around him the importance of laughter.

A sports enthusiast, Phil was an avid golfer and fisherman. When he was not participating in sports he enjoyed watching them. Cheering on Notre Dame or Chicago Bears football, relaxing to a Chicago Cubs game, watching the Masters, or rooting for his favorite in a Nascar race; all were favorite pastimes.

In honoring Phil’s memory, the family would like to express their gratitude to the caregivers and hospice; acknowledging the compassionate care they provided.
