Sally Hamburg, 87, died on April 24, 2024, after a brief battle with cancer.
A retired, award-winning nonprofit leader and former teacher, Sally was cherished by her family, friends, and the entire South Bend, Indiana community. Known for her warmth, joyous spirit, and dedication to bettering others, she taught elementary school students in Madison, Wisconsin, and was an early leader in a nonprofit serving Indiana special needs families.
Born in Chicago, Illinois to Walter and Muriel Schulman on November 25, 1936, she attended the University of Michigan, where she met her husband, Roger, who passed away in 2022 after 63 years together. She later graduated from Roosevelt University and has called South Bend home since 1971.
Happy hour with friends and family was one of her favorite pastimes. There, she celebrated life, shared wisdom, engineered spirited laughter-filled debates, and expressed gratitude for everyone near her.
Sally is survived by her children, Phillip (Holly) of Northbrook, Illinois; Ruth (Michael) of Las Vegas and Joel of South Bend; along with grandsons, Jake and Adam Hamburg, both students at the University of Wisconsin in Madison; her beloved sister-in-law, Carol Schulman; as well as nephews, Chuck, Ron and Mark Schulman; “nieces,” Rachel, Laura, Lisa and Jen Schulman; grand-nieces, Bex, Dina, Jenna & Katie Schulman and Sarah Horowitz; grand-nephews, Max, Ben, Jack & Sam Schulman & Alec Horowitz and grand-nephew to be, Ari Markowitz. She is predeceased by her adored younger brother, David Schulman; and her parents.
