Stanley J. Raska passed away at his home unexpectedly and went to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 18, 2023 at the age of 73. He was a man of God, loving husband, father, and grandfather, and he will be missed fiercely by his family and friends.
Stan was born on August 18, 1949 to the late Lester Nathaniel and Teresa (Collins) Raska in LaPorte, IN.
He is survived by his wife of more than 53 years, Jeanne; their daughter, Rachel (Jason Selle) Raska-Selle; grandsons, Gabriel and Gideon Selle; sister, Rebecca Raska; brothers, John (Linda) and Allen (Judy) Raska; and honorary son, Rueben Garces.
He was preceded in death by brother, David Raska.
Stan was generous to say the least, with an undeniable willingness to serve. Throughout his life, Stan answered the call to help those in need. As a decorated Air Force Vietnam Veteran, he was awarded the Airman’s Medal for his courage and heroism saving a group of Vietnamese Nationals from a burning building.
Later in life, he and Jeanne spent more than 40 years volunteering at Juvenile Detention Centers throughout the Michiana area. Stan coordinated basketball practices, ran bible study sessions with his wife, and acted as a mentor to young men and women who needed it the most. He was also an active member at church, serving on the prayer team and as an usher. No matter what Stan was doing, he always heeded the call, despite how large or small the task was.
Outside of his military service, Stan owned and operated Morningstar Insurance Agency for more than 30 years. He also loved exploring the outdoors with his family. He enjoyed hiking, picnicking, fishing, swimming, and riding bikes to local parks. He also loved playing board games with his family. He also loved to support the arts and sing.
As a child, Stan participated in 4-H and worked on farms with his siblings. He always enjoyed gardening, and as an adult, you could often find him outside working on the landscaping at his countryside home.
While Stan will undoubtedly be missed here on earth, there’s no question that Heaven gained another saint. He left behind him a legacy of selflessness and kindness that will be carried on by his loved ones and those whose lives he touched throughout his lifetime.
