Susan Fuhrer

Mar 16, 1944 — Nov 1, 2026

Notre Dame

Susan Fuhrer, 82, passed away peacefully on November 1, 2026. Born March 16, 1944, she was the daughter of the late James and Dorothy Leeb. She was also preceded in death by her son, David, at the age of 4.

Susan married her best friend from high school, Jack Fuhrer, immediately after graduating from Wheelock College in 1966 with a BS in early childhood education. Twenty-five years later, she earned a BA in music from Westminster Choir College in Princeton NJ.

As a member of the Westminster Choir, Susan sang major works at Carnegie Hall in New York, and at Lincon Center in Washington DC. Susan was privileged to have sung Mahler’s second symphony under the direction of Leonard Bernstein in Carnegie Hall. One of her prized possessions was Bernstein’s autograph on her score of the Mahler second. She was a piano teacher for twenty-five years until her devastating stroke in 2002. After her stroke, she found great joy in therapeutic horseback riding.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Jack; son, Jonathon (Amber) Fuhrer; daughter, Carolyn (Chris) Sullins; 4 grandchildren: Alexa and Chloe Fuhrer and Emily and Kira Sullins; and her sister, Kanta (Carl) Kahn.

She will be cremated and laid to rest in Cleveland, Ohio. Memorial contributions may be made, in Susan’s memory, to Reins of Life – for therapeutic horseback riding.
