Susan Spicer Levy, age 79, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away peacefully Sunday December 21st at her home in Westfield, Indiana. Susie was born, raised, and married in South Bend, a place she cherished throughout her life. Her parents, Elinor and Eli Spicer, were her lifelong mentors, and together with her older brother, Jeff Spicer, her sister, Shelley Bishop, and her younger brother, John Spicer, she enjoyed nearly 75 wonderful years rooted in the South Bend community.
Susie married Edward Levy on August 9, 1975. They spent almost their entire married life in their home north of South Bend, where they raised four beloved daughters: Julie Wright (Mike Weaver) (former spouse Matt Wright), Rachael McDaniel (Ryan), and twins Melissa Feller (Brandyn) and Alison Leslie (Matt).
In 2020, Susie and Ed moved to Westfield to be closer to their family, especially their nine grandchildren: Owen, Nathan, Madison, Hailey, Emmett, Charlie, Clara, and twins Lucy and Sam.
Susie lived a full and accomplished life. She began her career in South Bend as a teacher at Adams and Penn High Schools and later taught cooking classes at Indiana University South Bend and Temple Beth-El. Her passion for baking eventually led her to start her own business, Sweet Susie’s Cakes and Desserts. She provided pastries for restaurants, country clubs, and countless individuals, and Ed often said she could step in as a line chef in any restaurant. Susie was accustomed to working long hours to fill all the orders she had received, maintaining an inventory in the four freezers she kept filled nearly year-round. But above all, her greatest accomplishment was teaching her family that the most important thing in life is family. In the end, all we truly have is our health and one another.
A very private person, Susie never sought recognition for her talents or accomplishments. She was always willing to help others quietly and generously. She hoped that in retirement she would be remembered for her specialties, especially her coconut cake, cheesecake, and her exceptional brownies and cookies, and the love she put in every bite.
Susie requested a small, private service. Funeral arrangements are being handled by McGann Hay. In lieu of flowers, Susie asked that donations be made to Planned Parenthood or to a food bank of your choice. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to AccentCare Hospice for their compassionate care during Susie’s final weeks.
“If I had my life to live over again, I’d find you sooner and love you longer.” (ecl)
