Thomas "Tom" Lewis

Thomas F. Lewis, Jr. passed away peacefully in Fishers, Indiana, on August 3, 2026, after a long illness.

Tom was born September 8, 1938, in Freeport, Illinois. His parents, Thomas F. and Myra M. (Brophy) Lewis, predeceased him, along with his sister, Mary, and brother, Jack (Nancy) Lewis.

Tom is survived by his college sweetheart and love of his life, Jena M. (Hubbs) Lewis. They were married August 19, 1961, at St. Anne’s Catholic Church, East Moline, Illinois. Tom was preceded in death by Jena’s parents, John and Georgina (Bonte) Hubbs and her five siblings (Jeanne, John, James, Joel, Jeri, and their spouses). He is also survived by his two brothers, Dan Lewis and Kevin (Pattie) Lewis.

Tom and Jena’s nearly sixty-five years of marriage were consistently blessed with six children, twenty grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren: Chip (Ana Maria Bruun) Lewis, Madeline (Michael Infantine, Franklin, Poppy), Tommy (Lauren) and John Paul; Julie (Lewis) Bible, Chris, Katie, Sean, and Meghan; Cindy (Gregg) Wallander, Jena (Ben Gemkow), Mary (Lucas Schaller, Jack, Oliver), Erin (Daniel Ureel), and Sara (Austin Trim); John (Maureen Ryan) Lewis, Tucker, Cooper (Olivia), Maccoy, and Quinn; Jenny (Paul) Jordan, Ryan, Hayley, and Elizabeth; Christopher Lewis, Liv, George, (Neha Biggs, Millan, and Simran). Now the 4th Generation of great-grandchildren has arrived: Frankie and Poppy Infantine, along with Jack and Oliver Schaller. Tom also had many nieces and nephews who were dear to his heart. His family brought him his greatest joy!

Tom graduated from Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Grade School, Chicago, Illinois; Kendallville High School, Kendallville, Indiana; St. Joseph College, Rensselaer, Indiana; and Indiana University School of Law, Bloomington, Indiana. While attending law school, Tom was honored as a published member of the Indiana Law Journal and earned top honors as a member of the Order of the Coif Honor Society.

After earning his Doctor of Jurisprudence degree, Tom joined the law firm of Jones, Obenchain in South Bend, Indiana. He became a partner and practiced law for 45 years before retiring to Florida. He received many career honors, including being admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court and the United States Tax Court. He was named among the Best Lawyers in America, the Who’s Who of Lawyers and honored as a Fellow of the Indiana Bar Foundation.

While in South Bend, Tom was an Adjunct Professor at Indiana University South Bend, teaching Business Law. Several years later, he taught Medical Law at Notre Dame Law School, again as an Adjunct Professor. He enjoyed his brief return to the classroom at both schools.

Tom joined many civic groups and served as president of several, including: The Summit Club, the Notre Dame Quarterback Club, the St. Joseph County Mental Health Association, Kappa Delta sorority parents group, and the PTO of Swanson Elementary School.

He received many honors over the years: Best Lawyers in America, Who’s Who of Lawyers, Distinguished Fellow of the Indiana Bar Foundation, and was presented the Distinguished Hoosier Award from the Governor of Indiana in recognition of his significant community contributions and professional excellence.

Tom’s finest hours came from directing and participating in family sports and activities. He coached baseball and basketball teams, winning a few trophies along the way. Tom always wanted what was best for his children and enriched their lives through faith, education, Irish humor, and wisdom. His family members appreciated his quick wit and intelligence. He was usually a winner in family Jeopardy contests! He spent his spare time cooking, reading, and listening to music. Tom often enjoyed a round of golf with family and friends as a member of Morris Park Country Club, even achieving a hole-in-one in his golf career. Tom attended Mass regularly, often daily, and was considered a Biblical scholar.

Tom was also fond of sports and travel, combining both when possible. His favorite teams were Notre Dame, Indiana, the Chicago Bears, and the Chicago Cubs. His zeal for his teams was passed on to his family. Vacation trips in the “Blue Streak” van or “Honey” camper managed to cover most of America and Canada. His final trip with all eight original family members was to Maui. Then weddings happened at the rate of six in ten years, and his family grew from there. Tom and Jena spent their winter months at Isla Del Sol in St. Pete’s Beach, FL, enjoying steady visits from family members and time with local friends.

Family and friends are invited to services at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Granger, Indiana. Visitation will be at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, August 14, with Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be at Cedar Grove Cemetery, Notre Dame, Indiana, after the church service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Pius X Catholic Church, Granger, Indiana, or St. John Vianney Catholic Church, Fishers, Indiana.
