Granger

Vincent Chara, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away on January 5, 2025, at the age of 83 in Granger, Indiana. Born on April 26, 1941, in Tynec nad Labem, Czech Republic (then Czechoslovakia), Vincent became a skilled mason in the City of Most after high school. Vincent and his wife, Margaret Filip, were married on December 17th, 1960. Following the Russian Invasion, Vincent and Margaret, with their twin daughters, Ann and Venus, defected from Czechoslovakia in 1973 and emigrated to the United States via Austria in 1974. He became a pride-filled citizen of the United States in 1983.

Shortly after arriving to New York, Vincent and Margaret settled in Jackson Heights, Queens where they lived in the same home for 41 years. His work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit were defining facets of his character throughout his life. Through perseverance and dedication, Vincent lived out the American dream. He invested in a taxi medallion and spent 15 years driving his cab before opening a gas station, which he owned and managed. A true jack of all trades, Vincent prided himself on his ability to learn and fix things on his own. This skill not only became a hallmark of his personality but also a source of satisfaction and pride throughout his life.

He found joy in hobbies that reflected his multifaceted interests. He dedicated himself to the study English as he planned for his family’s defection from Czechoslovakia, with the goal of emigrating to the United States. He enjoyed learning about the construction methods of his new homeland and single-handedly renovated his house. He was a self-taught stock trader, researching markets and trading stocks until very recently. As his health declined, Vincent enjoyed jigsaw puzzles and assembled hundreds over the years, reveling in the challenge each presented.

Vincent's legacy is carried on by his loving wife, Margaret, who stood by his side through all of life's adventures, as well as his two cherished daughters, Ann (David) Chara-Bailey and Venus (Kevin) Chara Doherty. He was dedicated to his grandchildren: Kevin Vincent Doherty, Lauren Margaret Mary Doherty, John Carter Bailey, and Benjamin Thomas Bailey, each of whom held a special place in his heart. Vincent and Margaret moved to Indiana in 2018.

He is also survived by his brothers, Josef (Marta) Chara and Vladimir Chara, who shared many memories and experiences throughout their childhood. Vincent was preceded in death by his parents, Vaclav and Anna (Pospisilova) Chara, who shaped the values he carried throughout his life.

As we remember Vincent Chara, we reflect on a man who embraced life with determination and an unwavering love for his family. His spirit will undoubtedly continue to live on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.

A private service will be held on the campus of Notre Dame.
