Wayne Richard Smith, age 76, passed away peacefully July 28th. Born on Mother’s Day, May 8, 1949, in Mishawaka, Indiana, Wayne was the son of William R. Smith and Marjorie (Dutrieux) Smith.

A graduate of Riley High School, Class of 1968, Wayne enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1969. He graduated from Great Lakes Naval Academy and was stationed aboard the USS Lester in Naples, Italy. He was honorably discharged in September 1972. Embracing a love for travel and learning, he remained in Italy for another year while studying at the University of Florence before returning to the U.S. to complete his BA degree in Psychology with a minor in Business at Indiana University South Bend.

On May 8, 1976, his birthday, Wayne married the love of his life, Jeri (Brosnan) Smith, who survives. Wearing a top hat, gloves, and cane to the altar, he embodied his signature flair and humor from the very start of their 49-year marriage.

Wayne and Jeri made their home in Granger, Indiana, where they raised two daughters, Marla Smith of Scottsdale, Arizona, and Raquel (Randy) Muessig of Granger. Wayne was a devoted grandpa to four grandchildren: Reese and Remy Muessig of Granger, and Katerina and Marcus “Marcos” Theocharides of Cyprus. He is also survived by his beloved sister, Marlene (Michael) Tom of Honolulu, Hawaii.

After a lifelong career in logistics, working as a sales representative for LTL freight companies, Wayne retired in October 2013. After retirement he and Jeri spent winters in Cape Coral, Florida, and summers at their favorite spot—Diamond Lake, Michigan.

Wayne was the life of the party. He cherished his weekly euchre games with longtime friends and loved fishing, hunting, golfing, and many adventures including visiting the pyramids of Egypt & a final trip to Italy. His storytelling, sense of humor, and larger-than-life presence will be deeply missed.
