Phyllis Rubin Obituary

Phyllis Flamm Rubin, 93, former 69 year resident of South Bend, passed away May 22, 2023 in Columbus, Ohio. Phyllis was born March 25,1930 in Chicago, IL to Joseph and Anna Flamm. She grew up on the family farm with older brothers, Seymour, Irving and sister Harriett. Phyllis was the last living member of the Flamm Farm Family of Eau Claire, MI.

She married Jean Rubin of South Bend, May 7, 1950. Jean preceded her in death as well as her first born, Joseph Flamm Rubin.

Phyllis is survived by her daughter, Ellyn Joy Rubin of Atlanta, GA, and her son, Daniel Ray ( Shellie) of Venice, FL. She was Bubby to her granddaughter, Aaryn S. Rubin (Ephraim Hollander, MD) of Columbus, OH; and was Alta Bubby to their children, Moshe, Dovy, Hannah Rose, Sima Tova, Ella Jean and Tehila Tziporah. She was also Bubby to grandson, Nathan H. (Arielle Sosland) of Cherry Hill, NJ. Phyllis is also survived by Katie Hibbs, who she considered her own.

Phyllis worked with Jean at Niles Lawn and Garden, then for the state parole office, food stamps, welfare and REAL services. She was known for her artistic talents; cake decorating, creating delicious desserts, calligraphy, drawing, painting, needle work, and had a green thumb. She loved growing things. She also was the ultimate shopper, and could spend hours just looking, much to the chagrin of her family.

She enjoyed people and loved to meet new friends. She would have been a great store greeter, but would have eventually been fired, since customers would spend more time talking to her than shopping.

She was Bubby Rubin to the daughters of the Hebrew Orthodox Congregation and loved each and every one of them.

Phyllis was a member of the Hebrew Orthodox Congregation in South Bend and the Beth Jacob Congregation in Columbus, OH.

Funeral services were held at the Hebrew Orthodox Cemetery on Wednesday May 24th at 1pm with Rabbis Danziger, Kenzer and Gewirtz officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her name would be most appreciated to Hebrew Orthodox Congregation, 3207 High St. South Bend, IN 46614.
